However, when shopping online for a barbell, you will encounter all sorts of different types of barbells.

You will find some that are specifically used for powerlifting, some that are used for bodybuilding, some that are used for Olympic weightlifting, what is the difference between all these bars, and how do you know?

Today, we will be answering this question.

In addition, we will also discuss what to look for when purchasing a barbell, the specifications and review of the fringe sport wonder bar, and my personal take on it.

The following section is dedicated to discussing some of the unique characteristics of fringe sport’s wonder bar.

Bushings vs Bearings

What makes the fringe sport wonder bar so special is that it allows you the choice between choosing between a bushing or bearing when ordering the bar.

Bushings/Bearings are at the end of the bar where the barbell connects with the collar. Whether you choose between a bushing or bearing depends on how much spin you want on the bar.

You can choose between a wonder bar with a bronze bushing or with a needle bearing cartridge.

Bronze bushings

Bushing barbells are common for heavy or slower lifts, such as powerlifting.

Bushing barbells are easier to maintain than their needle bearing counterparts, easy to disassemble, clean and reassemble, making them more durable.

These are for people who don’t want their weights to spin while they are performing their exercise.

Just a slight spin might throw off your balance.

Needle bearings

Bearing barbells are common for faster lifts, such as Olympic lifts.

Needle bearing cartridges in the collars provide a little more spin than a bushing barbell. Bearing barbells have smoother rotation and cost a little more than a bushing.

This is great for those who want to perform Olympic lifts but annoying if you want to perform powerlifting lifts.

For those who are into powerlifting or wish to be able to perform the deadlift without the bar spinning away from you while you are trying to set up, you might want to go for the bronze bushings.

Smooth knurl depth

A smooth knurling was added to the fringe sport wonder bar as a way to allow lifters to perform Olympic lifts without having to worry about cutting up their hands while simultaneously adding additional grip support.

A downside of smooth knurling is that it might not be enough for you to perform heavy deadlifts if you plan on using this bar for both Olympic weightlifting and powerlifting.

Another point to take into consideration is that there is no center knurling.

This can be a downside if you plan on using this bar for heavy squats as there is nothing in the middle of the bar that will keep it from slipping.

The wonder bar is made out of alloyed steel and coated with a layer of black zinc.

Alloyed steel is a very strong, durable material and is resistant to corrosion. The additional layer of black zinc also aids in preventing corrosion.

Overall, the bar is made out of high-quality material that is up-to-date with industry standards, will last you for a long time, and is capable of handling heavy weight.

Pros and Cons of the Fringe Sport 20KG Men Wonder Bar V2

  • Choice between bushings or bearings – Being able to choose between bushings or bearings is a godsend.

It’s annoying to spend hours looking up different barbells for different needs only to find out that it only comes in bushing or bearing form.

By allowing you to choose between which one suits your needs the best, the wonder bar serves a wider audience.

  • Alloyed steel and black zinc – As stated earlier, the alloyed steel and black zinc makes it so that the bar is much more resistant to corrosion than barbells that were made out of just steel.

This means a longer-lasting barbell.

  • IWF certified – This barbell meets the qualifications of the international weightlifting federation which means it is similar to the barbells you will find when competing in Olympic weightlifting.

This allows you to train with specificity which is important if you wish to compete among the greatest competitors

  • Smooth knurling depth – this can be seen as both a pro and a con.

As a pro, the smooth knurling allows you more grip support while not cutting up your hands.

The reason why I also put it in the con is because for me personally, I prefer a medium knurling when performing my lifts.

  • Lack of center knurling – the lack of center knurling makes it less suitable for those who wish to perform heavy squats.

A center knurling allows the barbell to stay on your back during the squat.

On the other hand, removing the center knurling makes it more suitable for use during Olympic lifts because Olympic lifts have you resting the bar on your chest in certain positions.

A lack of center knurling will help prevent it from chafing your chest which could distract you from completing the lift.

  • Smooth knurling depth – as previously stated, the smooth knurling can also be a con if you are someone like me who likes a more medium or stronger knurling depth.

If the bar was even more customizable, it would be perfect.

Olympic bar vs standard barbell

The two main types of barbells you will see are standard barbells and Olympic barbells.

Standard barbells are the ones that you will most likely see in a standard commercialized gym.

They are long, fairly rigid, made of steel, and vary in quality based on the brand.

They can be used for a variety of barbell exercises and are used by powerlifters and bodybuilders alike.

These are the bars that powerlifters use during competition.

The second type of barbell that exists is an Olympic weightlifting barbell.

These barbells are designed for those who wish to perform Olympic lifts such as the snatch and clean and jerk.

These bars are designed to be more flexible, spin easier, and have less sharp of a knurling than standard barbells.

You could also use these bars for standard barbell/powerlifting exercises just like you can use a standard barbell for Olympic weightlifting exercises, but understand that at the higher levels of competition, a slight increase in whip can make all of the difference.

Final Review

The Fringe Sport Wonder Bar is a great barbell that has a variety of uses.

It can be used to perform any standard barbell exercises, but where it excels is for those who wish to use it to perform Olympic lifts.

If you are a beginner at lifting weights or even a seasoned vet and you are looking for a power bar rather than a bar with a ton of spin, you might also want to check out Rep Fitness's Stainless Steel Power Bar V2 as well.

Nevertheless, the Fringe Sport Wonder Bar is still a very solid barbell for all of your lifting needs.

It has a lot more whip than the traditional barbell and has a smoother knurling which offers superior grip with only minimal pain.

Overall, it is a great bar more suited for those who wish to perform Olympic lifts.
